ALAS!!! DIGG BANNED ME FOR…..NOTHING

Yesterday when I tried to log in to my Digg account I was shocked to see my account as invalid. All my friends, fans, details, submissions etc were gone. For those of you who are thinking “What a big deal in it?” let me tell you that Digg is an almost indispensable tool to promote your blog or site, because of two reasons first – storiesarticles or whatever submitted to Digg are ranked very high in Google and other search engine results. And you can imagine what does that mean to be in the top 10 or 15 (First search results page) search results in Google – hundreds of thousands or more visitors to your BlogSite, (or in other words resulting in more Ad clicks or lots of money). The second reason is that Digg itself is a huge community of bloggers and visitors and if your submitted Post or Article become popular enough on Digg, you just can’t even imagine the number of visitors to your blog (May reach lacs in number per day for Digg front page stories).
If unfortunately you are banned from Digg, then although you can create a new account with a different ID but all your previous submissions will become useless, reason is that they would be removed from Digg, so no visitors from Digg itself (you will have to do all the submissions again). Also the previous submissions will appear in Google search results but the links will become broken and useless as they will return no reply when clicked (Saying something like – “What you are looking for is not here” or “Whoa! Something Blew Up”)
Now in my case I could not understand what went wrong with my Digg account. So I mailed support@digg.com asking the reason. Two days later I received reply telling that I violated their terms and conditions but how? they did not give any further details and also added that the removal of account is an “Irreversible” decision. I was fuming and thinking what the heck I did? Then one thing came into my mind, perhaps the reason of removal is a post of mine that I submitted some days back, so things went this way – some say that this is a Hoax, I spread it and Digg kicked me out!!! As simple as that! but how cruel of them they should have given me atleast one chance.
Now I have created another account with a different ID and will have to do all the hectic work of submission again……And you know something, this very post that you are reading, will be my first submission. Now this is called Tit For Tat.
I will write a post about these very useful social networking and bookmarking sites (Digg, Stumble Upon, Propeller etc.) in my series on Blogging later on…..Bye for now

    In one of my previous Post, I discussed how social bookmarking sites (Digg, StumbleUpon, Del.icio.us etc) can help increase your sites popularity. To utilize their potential fully, it is necessary to add a “Submit to Digg, Reddit etc…” Buttons at the end of every post so that your readers can easily bookmark the post if they want. There are many such widgets and ways to add this functionality to your blog.
    Feedflare is one such service offered by FeedBurner. I suppose, most of todays bloggers are aware of Feedburner (A google service for generating and promoting feeds for your blog or site). If you are not aware of it still, then let me tell you that Feedburner is a must-have tool for promoting your blog, it offers some great services including analysis of your blog traffic, optimization, promotion (with the help of some wonderful widgets) and even monetization (through Adsense ads displayed in Feeds of the blog) – all this for absolutely free, so if you are a serious blogger then create an account soon.
    Login to your FeedBurner account and click the name of your blog, go to Optimize page, there click
     FeedflareHere you can customize which Social Bookmarking Site you want to add to your widget (or “Flare” as it is called) and in what sequence, also you can add more such sites to your Flare through the option of “Add new Flare” by browsing through the catalog provided. It is also an option to choose different Flares for the Blog and the Feeds. After customization just copy and paste the generated code (According to your blogging platform) into your blog template as per instructions given and you are done. You can see a simple example of Flare at the end of this post. The look and layout of the widget can be further customized by tweaking the code – A task that I leave to my dear buddy and the code geek, requesting her to write a detailed post on beautifying this widget…….

    This post is for those new bloggers who have just created their blog at Blogspot and do not know how to edit the template. So here we go:
    First login to your blogger account, this will take you to “Dashboard” as shown below, fine, now click on “Layout”

    Now click “Edit HTML”

    Before making any changes to your template’s code,make sure to backup the template to your hard drive by “Download Full Template” option so that you can safely revert back to your previous settings if anything goes wrong

    Now this is the template code of the blog. For advanced code editing, Check the “Expand Widget Templates”

    HOW TO REMOVE THE NAVBAR (NAVIGATION BAR) FROM THE BLOGGER BLOG

    Just look at the Header of this blog, note that there is no trademark blogger navigation bar, where it has gone? Well actually I made this bar hidden to make the header look different from typical “Blogspot Blog”. You too can do it in your blogger blog. First search and find the following lines of code in your blog template (To find Press Ctrl+F or Edit/Find in your browser, a search box will open, in search box enter what you want to find)

    Now copy following lines of code JUST AFTER or BELOW the above code
    #navbar-iframe {  height:0px;
      visibility:hidden;
      display:none;
    }
    Preview the template. If everything remain alright as desired, then save template and Bingo! your Navbar has just vanished. If you are not familiar with editing the template’s code then read this EDITING THE TEMPLATE OF BLOGGER BLOG – STEP BY STEP first

  • BLOG PROMOTION TOOLS – FEEDBURNER

    FeedBurner (www.feedburner.com)
    Your blog-host no doubt creates an RSS feed for your blog (ditch it if it does not), to keep your readers updated about the new content from the comfort of their default RSS reader. FeedBurner takes the simple functionality of RSS and “burns” your feed by adding a host of options to help you snag more subscribers.
    Burning the Feed
    Once you have completed the ridiculously simple registration process, you will be asked to burn your feed by supplying the URL of your blog’s RSS feed. Configure your feed title, and your feed will be assigned a FeedBurner URL instead—http://feeds.feedburner.com/yourfeedaddress, for example.
    Once you have claimed your blog, FeedBurner enables the Browser Friendly and Standard Stats services to make your feed more readable in browsers and track your feed statistics respectively. The next page lets you configure Standard Stats, and I recommend checking the Clickthrough option. This lets you track the number of times a link in your post is clicked; if you are linking to corporate Web sites, these statistics should play a role in snagging advertisers.
    Optimising Your Feed
    After login to FeedBurner, click on the title of your blog to go to the control panel, from where you can select the various ways to configure the way your feed looks in an RSS reader. Here following options are available:
    1. SmartFeed: This has quite a simple purpose—to ensure that your feed is compatible with virtually any RSS reader available. Recommended, because you never know what RSS reader someone is using.2. FeedFlare: Enabling this feature lets you put links into your feed posts that will help users give you feedback or tell their friends about your blog—“E-mail the Author”, “Digg This”, “Post to Del.icio.us”, and so on. Read more about FeedFlare in one of my previous post.3. Link Splicer: This lets you include your favourites from networking sites like Digg and Del.icio.us and tell your readers what you like to read about. It doesn’t play any role in driving traffic to your blog directly, but it will give people a sense of knowing you, which will in turn keep them visiting your blog with the same, if not greater, regularity. Overall, though, there’s no pressing reason for you to have this enabled.4. Splicer: Much like the link splicer, this lets you include your photo feeds from Flickr, Buzznet or Webshots in your feeds. Again, no direct role in getting you more traffic.5. Geotag your feed: This lets you add your geographical latitude and longitude to your feed. Mostly pointless; if you find any use for this, do write in.6. Feed Image Burner: Lets you add a “Powered by FeedBurner” image or any custom logo to your feed.7. Title/Description Burner: Lets you change the title of your feed without having to change the title of your blog (something you’d have to do otherwise).8. Convert Format Burner: Lets you select a specific format (RSS or Atom) to convert your feed to. It’s best to avoid activating this—SmartFeed will do all the dirty work of making your feed standards-compatible anyway.9. Content Type Burner: This lets you choose a custom MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) type for the feed. If you’re not sure what to do with this, leave it alone.10. Summary Burner: This lets you add a little teaser about your blog to your feed. We recommend using this—a well-written description will draw in the crowds.Publicising Your Feed
    FeedBurner also offers services to help you increase the number of subscribers for your feed.
    1. BuzzBoost: This publishes your blog’s feed as plain old HTML, which you can then use on any site you control, and thus drive more visitors to your blog.2. Headline Animator: The Headline Animator gives you the code for a scrolling display of your latest posts that you can paste in the template of your site, or better yet, in your e-mail signature. On online forums that allow it, use this code as your signature to get people to take note of your blog.3. FeedCount: This is a simple bit of code that displays the current number of subscribers to your feed. It has little or no role to play in actually getting you traffic, but is good to use for bragging, nonetheless.4. E-Mail Subscriptions: Enabling this option gives you the HTML code required to offer readers the option of subscribing to your blog’s feed via e-mail.
